We have been running some quizzes in a distance-learning course with a 15 minute timer and automatic submission. We have done this a couple of times before, without any complaints, but this particular cohort has had a few problems.
I wonder whether anyone else uses the timer function and automatic submission, and whether anyone has had any issues with it?
A couple of people have complained that the timer on the quiz was displaying inaccurately. Apparently there was a jump from showing two minutes left to automatically submitting without warning. (We only have their word on this, as the log shows that they had 15 minutes. It could be that some browsers don't update the timer display reliably.)
In several more cases, people seem to have been given much more than 15 minutes. One quiz was open for at least 45 minutes without submitting, which clearly gives an unfair advantage.
One person complained that the quiz was submitted automatically after only about two minutes. The quiz log shows that it was submitted early, but there is no way to tell whether it happened automatically or whether the user just clicked the wrong button by mistake.
