In the political economies of the West the provision of social and affordable housing is in crisis. Nowhere is this more evident than in local and regional government. Faced with continued drastic budget cuts and shifts in political priorities new approaches to local and regional housing provision are a must. The success of any new approach will vary. Some will be seen as contradictions, some will be polemic, others welcomed.

This conference brings academics into the debate on housing design, provision and financing with local government officials, architects, artists, housing professionals and economists. It seeks to understand the role – and potential role – that government can have with the myriad of players involved in housing provision across the UK, Europe and beyond.

Papers will be selected for publication in: Housing Critical Futures book series, UCL Press; Housing the Future book series, Libri Publishing; Special Issue Publications of the Architecture_MPS academic journal; AMPS conference proceedings.
