Much depends on what sort of content you are talking about and
how you want to present it. I don't claim exhaustive knowledge but
know of two companies that have a track record of working with
heritage organisations with digital content.
Thirty8 Digital (http://www.thirty8.co.uk/) are a small consultancy
who do online stuff for the heritage sector. They don't do hosting
themselves, but can do the design and strategy and fix you up with
people who do. I've been impressed by what they do and hear nothing
but good about them. Not to be confused with 38digital, who are a very
different kettle of fish.
ULCC's research technologies team do offer hosting of large
digital content collections (or even small collections.) They
use a standard system, but can configure it so that you see
something that's very particular to the needs of your content.
More info here:

Disclosure: I used to manage the team at ULCC so could be said to have
an interest. However, I haven't worked there for 6 years so I've got
no direct or indirect interest in their business.
