Brief description of the proposed project:
Randomised trials are the gold standard for evaluating the effects of healthcare treatments and thousands of trials take place every year. However, despite trials being a cornerstone of evidence-based healthcare, many of the methods used in trials are remarkably free of evidence. This PhD is part of a new initiative called Trial Forge, which aims to make trials more efficient by systematically identifying and then filling gaps in evidence about how best to do trials. The PhD topic will depend on the skills and interests of the student. Topics that could be covered include:
• - developing effective participant recruitment strategies;
• - effective training of trial staff;
• - improving retention of trial participants;
• - reducing the burden of data collection;
• - reducing the impact of protocol changes; and,
• - auto-updating of systematic reviews.
Specific training is likely to include systematic review methods, training in the fundamentals of trial design and trial management and how to consider trial utility and feasibility when making trial design decisions. National and international links are excellent and the student is likely to build a substantial network of potential future collaborators.
