Data Scientist (Fixed Term)
Applications are invited for a new post of Data Scientist in the MRC Epidemiology Unit, a department within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The goal of the Unit is to study the genetic, developmental and environmental factors that cause obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders and to develop strategies for their prevention. These diseases present a major public health challenge and result from the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors that operate throughout life. The Unit comprises a number of inter-linked programmatic areas supported by a range of epidemiological studies and specialist teams that support the scientists in the delivery of their research aims.
The post will play a key role in InterConnect, an EU-FP7 funded project that is enabling cross-study analyses to facilitate research to understand the differences in diabetes and obesity between populations, including analyses of gene-environment interaction. At the core of the network is a technology platform for the harmonisation and analysis of data across studies in a manner that avoids the complex ethical and legal issues associated with the physical sharing of data. The purpose of this post is to extend the analytical functionality of the platform to broaden the research questions that can be addressed and the types of data that can be handled. The post-holder will also support the technical aspects of data harmonisation by developing algorithms and methodologies to transform data into common scales while maximising the value of the data.
The successful applicant will have skills and experience in 3 areas:
Technical know-how - The ability to use different programming languages and a strong grasp of at least one modern language is required. The post-holder will have experience preparing and analysing large and complex data sets. They should be comfortable using Linux and open source development tools to get things up and running.
Strong at maths and statistics - Our research is rigorous and the post-holder should have a strong background in applying mathematical and statistical techniques such as regression to large and complex data sets.
Able to understand the science - As part of an epidemiology research organisation, the post-holder should have the capability to understand the science that shapes the technical platform. They must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the data science underpinning a novel approach to international epidemiological research that will help address important public health challenges.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2017 in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
