With the usual apologies for cross posting, though with a request to pass to anyone who might be interested.
The University of Birmingham has just launched a new round of its Birmingham Fellows scheme for excellent early career researchers. These offer a five year research fellowship (with minimal teaching and admin) at the grade of lecturer which progresses to a standard permanent contract at the end of the five year term.
As part of ongoing investment in the Human Geography Group at Birmingham, one of the advertised themes for this year's Fellowships is in the area of Critical Urbanism. The blurb for this is as follows:
"Today, more people than ever before are living in cities, posing fundamental questions of social, economic and environmental justice. Answering these questions depends on building a shared social and political imagination and on technological advancements and economic interests. Critical urbanism emphasises interdisciplinary approaches to these challenges, moving beyond conventional neoliberal solutions and asking who or what cities are for. This emerging field of studies explores how cities can be better understood through ideas of: social justice; culture and creativity; infrastructure; water; digital economy and big data; green space; ecology and ecosystem services; urban conflicts; migration and security. Candidates would join a thriving cross-disciplinary team examining dynamic cityscapes across Europe, North America and the Global South."

The School of Geographical Sciences is an equal opportunities employer and holds an Athena Swan Bronze award. Female and BME staff are under-represented in the School and so we would particular value applications from such candidates. The School welcomes applications from candidates looking for flexible part time/job share arrangements as part of the appointment. Professor Eva Valsami-Jones is ([log in to unmask]; +44121 4145537) and the School's Equality and Diversity Lead (and current Birmingham Fellow) Dr Sara Fregonese ([log in to unmask]; +44121 414 3635) are available to discuss the School's equal opportunities policies.
