Dear colleagues
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Core Curriculum for Sociology in UK Undergraduate Medical Education.
The Core Curriculum for Sociology has been a truly collaborative effort involving social science academics and teachers (many of whom are members of the BeSST network), as well as doctors, patients, students and members of the public. The project of working together to consolidate good practice and improve the status of sociology and psychology in medical education has come a long way since the UK meeting organised by Andrew Russell and colleagues in 2002. This was followed by the work of Christine Bundy, Sarah Peters, Andrea Litva, Jo Hart and team who set up BeSST and developed the psychology curriculum; encouraging us to do the same for sociology. We have tried to acknowledge all these contributions in the document and would like to reiterate our gratitude to everyone.
We sincerely hope that the Core Curriculum for Sociology in Undergraduate Medical Education will prove to be a useful guide for individuals and groups involved at all levels of medical education. Our aim is to consolidate the position and status of Sociology and its contribution to the medical profession. Our goal is to ensure that teachers (academics and researchers) are well supported and importantly that students have the best grounding ahead of their service to patients, communities and populations. We want to ensure that these goals and the resources to support them are well publicised. We have sent hard copies of the guide to each medical school in the UK, and to the GMC, BSA and HEA who have lent their support to this project.
An e-version of the Core Curriculum for Sociology in Undergraduate Medical Education is available on our new website www.besst.info. Please take a look at the website if you have a minute - it is a live, dynamic area to which we can all contribute. You will also find an e-version of the psychology core curriculum there. You will find information about the BeSST special interest group (affiliated to AMEE - this is proving popular internationally) and there is a lively wiki. The website is a resource for generating collective themed information about issues, resources and solutions related to Social Science Teaching in Medical Education. The website contains contact details and more info about BeSST and its networks.
Please do visit www.besst.info for copies of the Core Curriculum for Sociology
We welcome you to distribute news of this launch and invitation to the BeSST website amongst your networks
Best wishes
Dr Sara MacBride-Stewart (on behalf of the Sociology group in BeSST)
Dr Simon Forrest (Chair of BESST)
