At Manchester Med School we had a similar issue with course content in
Blackboard diverting from what was in the tutor and student handbooks as
authors often updated one but not the other. Similarly our Programme
handbook had become a nightmare to update and manage. The answer to both
was to move everything to Wordpress and stop producing handbooks. 1 Med
Learn is our custom built learning platform which is not only a far better
experience than Blackboard, but we also have a plugin the allows the
student to generate a PDF of the content anytime they like. So, each PBL
Case the student completes can be generated as a PDF for download from the
live site. This way the only content that has to be maintained is on the
site, and we introduced a workflow engine (Oasis) that allows us to manage
the editing and publishing of content on the site itself. So now the site
has become the single point of truth, we have a QA process for authoring
and publishing content but students can still generate and download a PDF
for using offline or printing. This has been so successful - and popular
with the students - that we are moving all our programme information onto
a sister site with the same functionality and processes. Our Programme
Handbook is already on a Wordpress site and we no longer print it or make
available as a PDF, so we are extending this to cover all course
information so its indexed, searchable and contextualised.
