Our hosting needs are very different from what you're describing so it's probably not a great comparison but we use RackSpace. I'm told they're relatively dear, but it's not really that easy to compare hosts because of all the variables in any set-up beyond the most vanilla. Would I recommend them? Well they have asked me that regularly over the last 5 years, and I think I started by saying there was an 8/10 chance that I would but more recently have been saying 6 or 7/10. So yes, I'd probably recommend them, but ask me 10 times to get a more statistically valid picture.
Seriously, they are pretty good for our needs (a hybrid environment with hardware firewall and server as well as using their cloud offer for managed and unmanaged cloud servers, CDN, additional "block" storage, load balancers, extra databases). They are generally responsive to our needs, but some changes more recently have been annoying. Pertinently, I think they've brought in a minimum monthly cost for new cloud accounts, whereas it used to be that you could have an account and spend as little as you like. What they'd be like if you wanted simply to host, say, a single small server and perhaps a cloud database I'm not sure. Probably very good, but perhaps
I think it will depend partly on what role the developers are to have in future. If they're going to run the site and want as much flexibility/as little interference as possible from the host, and want a bare-bones server they can resize as needed, that's quite different to if they are just going to set it up and then hand it over to the client. One thing Rackspace does quite well is provide standard builds and whole stacks for a lot of applications (Minecraft, anyone?), which can be a leg-up to a setup where you are still looking after the infrastructure yourself.

Subject: [MCG] Website hosting services
Hello all,
I've had someone ask me for recommendations around good providers of hosting services for websites. They have opted to have one company build/develop the website and another company to host it. Does anyone have any experience of hosting their website with another company, other than the developer? I can think of one or two to suggest, but I'd like to know of any that you might have found delivered a good service, within the context of a museum website.
Many thanks,
Alec
