Hi Jon,
Thanks for the feedback, the subtitling for videos was a bit of a challenge with the tech we were using. To get subtitling into the experience was cost prohibitive because it wasn't supported by the tech and we would have needed to produce a bespoke solution. In the end we had to reach a compromise and released all of the videos separately with subtitling. If you scroll to the bottom of the page here: https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibition/ai-weiwei-360 you'll see a link to the YouTube videos with subtitles.
It does work really well on phones which support the accelerometer and a VR version of the experience would be amazing. Unfortunately this time around it was a bit beyond the budget but VR is getting much easier to implement and is certainly possible for future projects.
I wondered if I might be opening a can of worms with regard to the idea of digitising exhibitions. As a digital content creator it seems like a really natural extension to the physical exhibitions and could offer insight and perspectives that enhance the physical exhibition. However, I can see how there could be other opinions around this. I don't see how the digital detracts from the real world though. For example, 've seen a lot of posters, digital images etc. of the Mona Lisa but that doesn't reduce my desire to see the real thing. In fact if I hadn't seen these pictures I probably wouldn't even know about the Mona Lisa.
Thanks again for the feedback, it's very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Drew

It's a glossy-looking and thoughtful production, but I'm immediately struck by the lack of accessibility. There's no facility for subtitles.
Interestingly, once you're in a media piece, you can zoom the icon size, which is quite nice, but I'm really stuck when it comes to hearing the speakers. I'm sure there's great scholarship and insight present, and having text alternatives offers the chance for people to interact with that, and to search for it and use links outwards to enrich the learning experience.
I tried the content with my laptop (an i7 Lenovo) and my Android HTC (M8).
On the laptop it was a visual feast, but gradually felt like a funky 360 space with some bits of talking head-style telly embedded in it. On my Android, though, it came to life, because of the accelerometer in the phone. This made me think it'd be more fun to offer a Google Cardboard or Oculus version of the project. We're finding kids love Cardboard (if they've got a compatible phone) and it appears simple to manage and offers a low cost route for smaller arts orgs.
Well done for taking the plunge and doing the project, though. It's not until you try making new content formats that you realise where the pinch points and the development opportunities are. Regarding your other questions, about alternatives to reality and limited content lifespan, that's a whole different set of thorny discussions!
