Glad someone mentioned NFC and beacons as alternatives. Although as great
as NFC would be for this - it's really not that widely supported in phones
(so if visitors are using their own you'll have some problems).
I want to throw in Eddystone beacons and The Physical Web as one for the
future. Without getting into the technical details about how iBeacons
work. Eddystone is Google's open source version. These were announced
last summer and have the added advantage of being able to send a URL with
their Beacon information.
This means that you don't need an specific app for your museum. It appears
that this technology will be built into Phone OS in the future. Ironically
there is an app called 'Physical Web' that you will need to install for now
until it does become standard :)
So while you could build this right now - it would be a minority of users
that would know about it. Although if you need to convince them to install
a QR reader - maybe it's not much more hassle! The good news is that it
works with Bluetooth 4.0 - so the majority of visitors already have the
hardware in the phone as this has been standard for 3 or 4 years.
