I have no experience in teaching GCSE but I took it as a candidate. I wrote 150 characters in both tasks and got 100%, so I'd say it doesn't necessarily pay off to write more! I remember the 60 minutes were just enough for me to write all 150 characters correctly.

Subject: Edexcel writing CA
Dear colleagues,
I have just been reading the advice from the Edexcel examiner's report about the writing controlled assessment. There were 2 points that I wanted to ask your advice about:
1. Students do not gain any extra marks for writing more than 150 characters.
Is this true in your experience? How much do you encourage your students to write? Do you make them edit if they go over 150 characters? For pupils who find writing difficult and may just be aiming for a C grade, is 100 characters sufficient?
2. Students need to be more creative and go beyond just responding to the bullet points.
This seems to be very difficult except if you have got native speakers. Have you got any tips for encouraging pupils to do this?
Thank you in advance for your advice,
Nancy
