bvecs and bvals should come out ready to use if you use dicom to nifti converters like dcm2nii or MRIConvert. You shouldn't have to edit them unless you edit the number of directions for DTI after comversion.
bvals take on the form of
b0 b1 b2 b3 ... bn
bvecs take on
vx1 vx2 vx3 ... vxn
vy1 vy2 vy3 ... vyn
vz1 vz2 vz3 ... vzn
hope this helps

Subject: [FSL] DTI analysis problem
Hello FSL experts,
I am Faezeh Vedaei a research associate in a neurology lab at the Michigan State University. I am a beginner in DTI analysis and have had a problem in the process of analysis of one sample DTI data and so appreciate you if you help me in this process. In the step of DTIfit, I chose data, specially bvecs and bvals. I had an error containing: "bvecs and bvals do not have the same number of entries." I checked these two text files and found that they do not have same number of numbers. I revised them in several ways to create them in a same format, same numbers, same number of numbers, but anyway I have got that error as the result in any ways I tried. So, here, can you guide me how can I correct these two files and how can I solve the problem? In advance, I really appreciate your time and consideration.
Regards,
Faezeh Vedaei
