Dear colleagues,
I’m researching Lord Byron’s lover, Lady Oxford. The only record of how she met her husband (Lord Oxford), and the possible key to their enigmatic relationship, is a typewritten manuscript which until recently belonged to the late Hon. Edward Adeane, who passed away last spring. Obituaries indicate he is survived by his companion, Brent Snape, but mention no other surviving friends or family. I live in the United States am not especially familiar with the kinds of information which may be publicly available in Britain about estate sales, or with other methods of tracing items like this manuscript.
In case any of these details would be helpful, here is what I know about this document. A 1982 article by Kelvin Grose of the University of New England (who has also, it seems, passed away) refers to it as C. W. Bigge’s Reminiscences 1781-1845, describes it as a typewritten manuscript belonging to the Hon. Edward Adeane, and cites it for some details of Lord and Lady Oxford’s courtship. (Bigge was related to Lady Oxford by marriage, and Adeane was Bigge’s descendant.)
Any suggestions for how to look for this document would be most welcome! Please reply to me off-list (as I am not on the listserv) at: [log in to unmask]
All best,
