Initial notice and first call for papers
A two-day conference is being held on the 30th June -1st July 2016 at the Geological Society London entitled: Preserving and protecting your geological assets in a time of crisis?
This meeting is being organised by the Geoscience Information Group (GIG) of the Geological Society and the Data Management Group of the PESGB, and is supported by BGS, CDA and PPDM.
This event has been triggered in part by the huge drop in both oil and minerals prices over the last 12 months, and is an attempt to identify the different strategies and options available to ensure that our diverse geological assets (physical samples, hard copy and electronic documents, company archives, digital data, etc) are preserved and protected, and not lost in the resulting downsizing, layoffs, mergers and closures. We are also concerned that many of the Geological Surveys around the globe are also facing extraordinary pressures on their budgets at this time and could also be impacted by such cuts. Both factors are placing corporate and national collections in peril.
This meeting forms part of a series of Biennial Meetings held in conjunction with the PESGB and the meeting will be open to all members of both the Geological Society and PESGB. Further information about the conference and registration forms will be available shortly.
We would welcome offers of papers on any topic related to the above theme. To register your interest in presenting a paper at this conference, please contact the conference organiser, Dr Paul Duller at the following address: [log in to unmask]
