Dear colleagues,
I've realised that I forgot to summarise this for the list!
Here are the lovely answers provided by many of you. Thank you!

Hi Arike
The Secret files of Gilbert & George with Hans Olbrist is a good one too.
It's a documentary but not sure if it has been on tv.

(Mentioned more than once)
- Kubrick's Boxes:
'Stanley Kubrick's Boxes' - Jon Ronson documentary. It shows the archive before it was transferred to the University of the Arts London though. Possibly the only occasion that excessive tightness of the lids of Ryders' boxes has formed a plot point in a TV programme.
There was also a link to Vimeo which looks like it has the documentary online:

Dear Arike
Couldn't find any recent British examples, but I did find these two films from 1940 and 1953 describing the work of the US National Archives and Records Administration.
http://www.c-span.org/video/?320514-1/1953-documentary-national-archives
http://www.c-span.org/video/?320515-1/1940-documentary-washington-parade-archives
These are probably a too early and not immediately relevant, quite interesting from a historical perspective though and the enquirer may find them useful.
Best wishes,
Mike

Dear Arike,
Not really about an archive but a manuscript library, but still very
good:

Hi all,
BBC 6 Music had a mini feature with the wonderful Jarvis Cocker a few months back, delving into the BBC Vinyl archives. There is also another feature with him visiting the British Library Sound Archive. See links below.

Hi there
Toute la mémoire du monde (1956) Alain Resnais - not an archive exactly but it's a beautiful film.

I suggest 'Shooting the Past', although this is really about a photographic library rather than an archive...

What about Portillo's State Secrets? Mainly about the National Archive and the contents therein.

I remember watching one a while back about the BBC written archives over in Reading. It was hosted by Penelope Keith and showed some of the archival documents it held about TV stars and the context surrounding their creation. Don't recall the name of the show though. I saw it on iPlayer a few months ago.

Sue - it was "The Secret Files"

Good afternoon Arike
This might be straying past your request for 'TV documentaries', but here goes!
Tate Learning produced a series of videos relating to Tate Archive as part of the Transforming Tate Britain : Archives and Access project (http://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/video/archive-access-project-animating-archives).
Alain Resnais made a legendary documentary about the Bibliothèque nationale de France, including its manuscripts collections : 'Toute la mémoire du monde' (1956).
There are several films about the founder of the Cinematheque Francais, Henri Langlois - most notably, 'Henri Langlois: The Phantom of the Cinémathèque' (2004, Jacques Richard). 'Celluloid Man' (2012, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur), shown on Channel 4 last year or thereabouts, is about the heroic archivist of the Film & TV Institute of India, P.K. Nair.
Azza el-Hassan's 'Kings and Extras: Digging for a Palestinian Image' (2004) and Sarah Wood's 'For cultural purposes only' (2009) are about the lost Palestinian film archive; the first was shown on BBC, the latter on Channel 4.
'Finding Vivian Maier' (2013), about the discovery of an unknown cache of photographs, is arguably about a private archive.
IMDb lists the intriguing-sounding shorts 'National Archives of Finland' (1961, Veikko Itkonen) and 'City Archives' (1978, Richard Foreman), produced by Minnesota Public Programming & the Walker Art Center.
Finally, DVDs of restored film classics usually feature a supplementary feature about the restoration in the particular archive. I've seen the BFI's documentary on the restoration of the Captain Scott film 'The Great White Silence' on the Discovery Channel, for instance.
Hope this helps!

We had a 30 minute documentary on the School of Scottish Studies, broadcast on BBC Scotland on 30 November 2011.
It was made by Joseph Briffa for Hopscotch films and it may be possible to watch it online via the following link:

Alternatively there are one or two snippets on the bbc website:

Subject: Archives + tv documentaries
Dear colleagues,
A TV producer has asked me if I could think of any documentaries that are about AN archive, i.e. rather than featuring archives, the subject is the archive itself.
Scratching my head... any ideas?
Thanks!
