Sociologistsfor Women in Society (SWS) is currently accepting applications for the 2016Barbara Rosenblum Dissertation Scholarship for the Study of Women and Cancer. SWS is a nonprofit, scientific and educational organization with members in the U.S. and overseas. Its mission is to promote and disseminateresearch about women; educate colleagues, the general public, and government officials about the implications of research on women; offer help and mutual support to women and men who share the organization’s concerns; take political action to improve women’slives; and maintain relationships with national and international organizations for women and the ending of discrimination against women. The scholarship fund was established by Sociologists for Women in Society with a bequest from Dr. Barbara Rosenblum, an active and longstandingmember who died from breast cancer in 1988. The purpose of the scholarship is designed to encourage doctoral research on women’s experience of breast cancer and other reproductive cancers, aswell as the prevention of these cancers. The scholarship also supports efforts to make sociological research on these topics available to the public. Doctoral work can be in Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology or related fields (e.g. Ethnic Studies, Women’sand Gender Studies; Geography; International Development; Global Health). Eligibility:The candidate must identify as a woman with a feminist orientation who is sensitiveto studying women’s cancers and their impact on diverse groups of women, includingthose of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, language, religion, geographical areas, and other cultural perspectives. The candidate must have an approvedprospectus for doctoral research. The topic should be useful academically and also have pragmatic and practical applications (such as informing and empowering women,demystifying the disease, and/or having implications for the breast cancer epidemic more broadly.) The scholarship is intended for researchers who plan to present their findings and applications to lay audiences as well as social scientists.
