The Africa Centre for Population Health is a joint initiative of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the South African Medical Research Council, with support from the Wellcome Trust and other funders, to create a global centre of research excellence in a rural area. The Centre’s mission is to conduct in partnership with the community, policy-relevant health and population research in an ethical manner, and to enhance the capacity of the people of sub-Saharan Africa to conduct research.
The Centre is located in the rural Umkhanyakude District of KwaZulu-Natal. It hosts a number of clinical and social research projects, including Africa’s most comprehensive Demographic Surveillance System which monitors longitudinal vital events in a population of 90,000, and provides a rich base for health and social science research. The Africa Centre has an opening for three exciting Post-Doctoral Researcher Positions in HIV Epidemiology. The positions will form part of a larger cutting-edge research initiative that aims to identify and understand causal pathways of HIV infection in a rural South African population. The initiative will use longitudinal data from the Africa Centre’s population-based HIV testing, Africa Centre demographic information system (ACDIS) and geographical information system (GIS) to identify and quantify important environmental, community, household and individual-level determinants of HIV incidence and prevalence. The incumbents would be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and produce peer-reviewed publications.
Minimum qualifications and experience required:
• PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a closely related field;
• Experience in longitudinal data analysis;
• At least five peer-reviewed publication;
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
• Expertise in a statistics package i.e.; SPSS, Stata and R/Splus;
• Expertise in mathematical modeling would be considered an advantage
The positions will be offered by the University of KwaZulu-Natal on a three year fixed term appointment. A tax free stipend will be offered in accordance with the UKZN student maximum capped values. The process of selection will commence on the 01st March 2016 and will continue until suitable candidates are appointed or a decision is taken not to fill the posts.
