The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort.
Field Information Services (FIS) in Geneva is responsible for strengthening the information management capacity of OCHA in both disaster preparedness and response. The roles of the section are:
Facilitate the effective strategic management of OCHA's field information domain, i.e. the range and volume of information that OCHA acquires, generates and disseminates.
Provide coordination and leadership in the application of information management in disaster preparedness and response, helping to assure that the information resources and information management expertise required by OCHA to function effectively in emergencies is available.
Build sustainable partnerships in advance of disasters that directly contribute to the predictable exchange of information in emergencies.
The intern will be a member of the FIS team working to help FIS better understand how the emerging trend of data science, data journalism and related techniques/tools can be applied to improve OCHA's field Information Management as well as tell compelling stories with the increasing amount of humanitarian data becoming available. S/he will be expected to maintain close working relationships with the Communication Services Section (CSS), the Humanitarian Data Exchange team (HDX) and OCHA Country Offices. The intern, based in Geneva, Switzerland, will be reporting on a daily basis to a Programme Officer within FIS.
