Dear Colleagues,
The MBA, National Marine Biological Library and Euromarine would like to invite you to participate in the DIGIMAR – Future Course for Europe’s Marine Libraries workshop in Plymouth, 26 – 27th April, 2016.
Marine libraries have seen a drastic change in user behaviour over the past decades owing to the digital revolution. The general trend is towards “digital only” with libraries providing increasing amounts of (published) research materials electronically. In turn library users’ expectations have changed towards expecting material to be available online. This has led to footfall in libraries falling and concern from librarians that valuable information and knowledge stored in print resources is being neglected.
In many cases these libraries contain large quantities of unique and rare material in print format. These libraries are chronically underfunded and would benefit from a strategy to ensure vital information can be used to inform strategic, applied and investigative science as well as broader policy and economic (blue growth) considerations. Designing new services of interest to the Marine Research Community would facilitate this information flow.
This foresight workshop will:
(1) Explore current facilities to make historical information (e.g. taxonomic literature, grey literature, old and rare texts, photographs and expedition reports) available and searchable online
(2) Identify important historical literature collections to be digitized
(3) Understand how relevant information from such material could be extracted and submitted to overarching initiatives such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library or WORMS
Invited speakers include Wellcome Digital Library, Biodiversity Heritage Library, Flanders Marine Institute Library, Plazi, and EMOD-Net.
The workshop would lead to the production of a synthesis paper outlining a new, forward thinking role for marine libraries in the 21st Century. The paper will form the basis for a digitisation strategy of selected, unique records, and possible funding sources and scenarios.
The workshop will be held at the Marine Biological Association of the UK in Plymouth on the 26-27th April, 2016.
Please register for the event on the EMBRC website: http://www.embrc.eu/node/1161#
There you will find a Workshop Programme, Accommodation and Travel information.
Please register before the 20th March, 2016.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Plymouth and an interesting and productive discussion!
With kind regards,
Nicolas Pade
