Indeed. Milestones are like a flask of tea on a long journey: exciting to reach, and re-energising for the rest of the journey.
And as librarians we are probably even more reluctant than most to celebrate our successes!

Agree - essential for long-term projects (but also shorter) - defining the 'viable planning horizon' - what's the timescale you can realistically plan for and then assign tangible things along the journey that you can measure. For example, if you have to enrich 10,000 metadata records, just break it down and more shorter-term goals. And also, equally important, milestones where you can celebrate and keep momentum. We are quite averse to celebrating our own success in the UK.
