Big Data--Big Theory: Predictive Modelling and Communities of Cultural Practice
A series of research workshops, to be held on 1, 22 and 23 March, will investigate the potential for Statistical Learning, Information Theory and related approaches to account for meaning in cultural products. Current data-intensive computational research on music, art and literature often concentrates on classification or on prediction of consumer behaviour, while researchers in the arts are often concerned with the intrinsic qualities of the artworks themselves. Both communities, however, deal with issues of pattern, probability and expectation, suggesting possibilities for bridging the divide between them. The workshops will take place at Lancaster University under the auspices of the Insight research centre. Further information is available on the Insight website at http://insight.lancaster.ac.uk/?p=1571.
Attendance is by invitation only, but a few places remain available. It is not essential to attend every session. If you are interested in attending, please contact Alan Marsden ([log in to unmask]). Expenses for UK-based researchers will be covered from funds made available to Lancaster University by the EPSRC.
