To put this into a wider context, it's worth remembering the famine in Ireland from 1845 to 1852, "the great hunger".
An estimated one million people died of malnutrition and another two million emigrated.

From memory, there was a community of Irish born miners in Camborne from
about 1850, and I have just finished looking at the census records for the
Halkyn area in North Wales, and similarly there was a community there - but
can't quite remember the dates, but probably the same.
