Hi Nancy,
To your first question, please see below response from the Chinese Language Advisor at Edexcel:
'Although assessment is time constrained and primarily qualitative rather than quantitative, it is anticipated that GCSE Chinese students will produce at least 100 characters in each of the two writing assessment sessions. Students aiming for grade C or above will need to demonstrate more 'extended' writing skills and are expected to produce produce between 100 and 150 characters in each task. '
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Jing

Subject: Edexcel writing CA
Dear colleagues,
I have just been reading the advice from the Edexcel examiner's report about the writing controlled assessment. There were 2 points that I wanted to ask your advice about:
1. Students do not gain any extra marks for writing more than 150 characters.
Is this true in your experience? How much do you encourage your students to write? Do you make them edit if they go over 150 characters? For pupils who find writing difficult and may just be aiming for a C grade, is 100 characters sufficient?
2. Students need to be more creative and go beyond just responding to the bullet points.
This seems to be very difficult except if you have got native speakers. Have you got any tips for encouraging pupils to do this?
Thank you in advance for your advice,
Nancy
