Salary: Circa £45,000, plus excellent benefits

Ordnance Survey is the national mapping agency for Great Britain. We collect and maintain geographic data, from which we create a comprehensive suite of high quality data sets, products and services. This content is then sold or licensed to a wide range of customers, such as consumers, partners, industry and government.

We are further expanding our investment and engagement in geospatial research and so are recruiting a Principal Research Scientist in the field of smart and future cities. Relevant research could include optimising the modelling and handling of structured and unstructured data from a range of different data sources and tools that are emerging from sensor nets and the Internet of Things. We are also interested in practical interfaces to and geographical support for new smart city infrastructure, including for example Building Information Models (BIM) or intelligent mobility solutions. We also recognise the importance of the human dimension of cities, so research into quantified human geography of Great Britain is relevant, for example different communities’ understanding of location, space and place and associated informal place names, or understanding how geography is represented in social media. Equally we wish to further our engagement with the linked data and semantic web world, to understand how different representations of geography may enable new forms of data linking and analysis. For the purpose of this post our definition of smart and future cities is deliberately open, and we are interested in a wide range of applicants’ research interests.

We are seeking applications from highly qualified individuals (PhD or equivalent research experience). Whilst geospatial expertise is not essential, we are looking for an understanding of some of the particular issues associated with geospatial data in the context of cities – its collection, management, linking or analysis. This role will need you to be an enthusiastic communicator, be willing to travel, have a real appetite for exploring problems in collaboration with others and an interest in the potentials for data science and analytics. You will already have a track record for developing and publishing challenging research in this field. You need not be working in the geospatial field, but should have had some experience in tackling related problems.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop and manage research in the smart and future cities domain. This research will comprise both external research with universities and other research organisations and internal projects. External research management may include contributing to PhD student supervision, guiding and setting requirements for projects, and ensuring that the lessons from individual projects are successfully transferred into the business. As well as direct funding to projects from our research budget, you will be involved in bidding for funding from sources such as Horizon 2020 and InnovateUK. Your expertise will also be called on to help shape business strategy. Our research is carried out to understand new requirements and build new capabilities within the business but aspires to be of international, publishable quality, consistent with our position as a world-leading national mapping agency.

More details of the criteria and competencies we are looking for in applicants and links to the online application system can be found here:

https://ordnancesurvey.csod.com/ats/careersite/JobDetails.aspx?id=384

Applications close on Sunday 7th February. Interviews will be held on Thursday 25th February 2016 and the post is available from April.

Please email me with any queries relating to the post but note that applications are only accepted through the Web-based system available through the link above.

Regards,

Jeremy
