Mercy Corps, an international NGO working in over 40 countries around the world seeks a Consultant to help as City Migration and Public Works Specialist in Athens, Greece.
The ideal candidate has experience as a public administrator with a background in refugee integration.
This position will be embedded within the Athens City Hall and work closely with the Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff. The overall purpose of this consultancy is to further refine Mercy Corps’ strategy with the city of Athens and detail main activities over the coming 24 months. These must be consistent with Mercy Corps strengths and thought leadership, Athens city planning, and realities of asylum and refugee trends.
This position will analyze and understand areas where public servants will require additional training and sensitization to refugees.
This position will outline the priority areas required by the city for the integration of refugees from diverse cultures including: support in language skills, cultural awareness, integration to public services and needs from local, civil society. We must assume that refugees and asylees will congregate in the poorer neighborhoods of a city already hard hit by poverty and austerity. Therefore, recommendations should take an inclusive approach in which services do not target them exclusively, but also benefit poor, excluded host households.
Likewise, this position will outline a basic plan for a campaign introducing refugees to the Athens community that portrays refugees in a positive light, as future compatriots, and as productive citizens.
It is anticipated that a 24-month program will follow this role and at least 2 full time expatriates implementing this project in Athens city.
