The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University seeks to appoint an outstanding sociologist to lead one of the Sociology unit’s areas of research strength (Identities, Embodiments and Selves; Imagining Pasts and Futures and Power; Inequalities and Citizenship). Alongside the research centre PEALS, the research clusters provide the foundations for the unit’s collective research endeavour and culture. The successful candidate will have a track record in shaping sociological research agendas, generating research income, pursuing impact activities, and an international reputation. They will join a team who undertake original and critical research, alongside high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
The post, alongside other Faculty investment, aims to build on Sociology’s successful REF 2014 result (13th in the Sociology Panel, with 72% of our research activity ranked 4*/3*). The School is the core of the social sciences at Newcastle pursuing an ambitious agenda for its research and teaching, which is proving highly successful on multiple fronts. More than 85% of academic staff were submitted to REF 2014 and over 90% of staff regularly publish at internationally significant levels of originality, significance and rigour.
Informal enquires about the post can be made to Professor Janice McLaughlin (tel: +44 (0)191 208 7511). Applicants should indicate whether they wish to be considered for the position at Chair or Reader level.
