Special Session 3: Controls on clastic sedimentation in orogenic settings
Dear All,
As part of the 32nd IAS meeting of Sedimentology, which will be held in
Marrakech, Morocco (23-25 May 2016), we are organizing a special session
titled “Controls on clastic sedimentation in orogenic settings”, Session
SS3 of the Scientific Programme:
https://www.sedimentologists.org/ims2016/scientific
Please consider contributing to this session with an oral or poster
presentation. The session aims to bring together a variety of approaches
(outcrops, subsurface and numerical and physical modelling) to better
understanding of the controls on stratigraphic development of clastic
deposits in orogenic settings. The full session themes and aims are
detailed below.
Abstract deadline is February 1, 2016.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Special Session 3: Controls on clastic sedimentation in orogenic settings
The fill of sedimentary basins in orogenic geodynamic settings depends
strongly on tectonic and climatic controls such as thrusting, isostatic
response to deformation, hinterland climate changes on sediment flux and
their combined effects on relative sea level. Furthermore, tectonics is
primarily responsible for determining the evolution of basin geometry,
basin-floor topography and distribution of accommodation. In these
settings, therefore, variable and complex stratigraphic architectures
are developed, often characterised by topographically complex basins,
high sediment fluxes and distinctive sedimentary architecture and facies
associations. This session aims to bring together outcrop examples,
subsurface case studies and numerical and physical modelling that enable
a better understanding of the controls on stratigraphic development of
clastic deposits in orogenic settings. Topics addressed in this session
include: sediment flux response to climate change in mountain belts and
tectonic activity; tectonic controls on sediment delivery pathways;
provenance controls on sediment volume and grain-size; architectural and
facies tract response to evolving basin geometry and accommodation; mass
transport complex triggering processes and their effect on subsequent
deposition; orogenic petroleum systems including source- and
reservoir-rock types and distribution and trapping potential.
