"For the last ~60 years, sedimentologists, oceanographers and hydraulic engineers have attempted to understand the mechanics of gravity flows and their deposits through integrated laboratory flume experiments, outcrop and sub-surface studies, modern seafloor-mapping and numerical modelling. Significant advancements in this field of research have been made, resulting in detailed spatio-temporal models for sand-rich turbidity current flows and their deposits.
Astonishingly, very few studies have considered the role that clay and silt may play in changing the dynamics of turbidity current flows and the effect that this may have on depositional modes and resultant deposits. This is surprising, because between 85-95% of all sediment delivered to the ocean - via rivers - is mud, and most modern turbidity currents will therefore be sand-poor. Recent theoretical and experimental work into flow mechanics predicts that the presence of clay even at low concentrations may fundamentally change flow structure and deposit character away from the standard sand-rich turbidity current flow structure and classic Bouma-like deposits. This exciting new work has resulted in, amongst others, the hybrid event model and the transitional flow model.
The objective of this session is to bring together a range of researchers, including experimentalists, numerical modelers, marine geologists and field geologists, to focus on our current understanding of fine-grained (silts and clays) gravity flow processes and products."
