Dear Colleagues,
Various institutions are considering how to mark the 100th anniversary of
the Russian Revolution. The commemoration could take place in various ways
and at various times in 2017, starting from February with the February
Revolution and then reflecting various developments in the year "as they
happened", culminating in the October Revolution and its immediate
aftermath.
Our colleagues in British and European intellectual history will be closely
involved, because one thing we in Britain can major on is the interaction of
Russian thinkers and revolutionaries (some of them terrorists) with British
political and intellectual circles in the second half of the 19th century
and the first two decades of the 20th, and the consequences for the
Left/Right debate in British politics and the fledgling Labour party in
Britain...and a multitude of related themes.
The ferment of those days in London before and after 1917 is graphically
described in: Ivan Maisky, Journey into the Past, Hutchinson 1962.
Cf. The Communist Club, 107 Charlotte Street, London 1840-1914
and the Albert Hall "triumphal greeting to the Revolution", 31 March 1917..
