Call for papers: ASA 2016 Panel 58: 'Back to the Future?': Revising Theory in Human-Animal Studies
Abstract: Recent years have seen a significant increase in human-animal studies within anthropology and other disciplines. This drive seems to be aligned with a number of theoretical reformulations: predominantly the 'ontological' and 'material turn'. At the core of these debates is a move to go beyond the human and beyond nature-culture duality, and consider the more-than-human, other-than-human, and the non-human through a variety of approaches. Similarly, co-existence, co-habitation and symbiosis have become influential within theories regarding domestication. These theoretical developments have advanced our understandings of the human-animal interface in significant ways. However, some of the current literature seems to have forgotten older theoretical debates concerning the relationships of humans, other animals and their environments for instance in British, American and French anthropology; for example, totemism and animism. This panel, then, invites participants to critically engage with recent theoretical trends in anthropology, whilst being curious about the potentials and theoretical merit of older anthropological reasoning in the field. Papers that engage with in-depth ethnographic material are particularly welcome.
Convenors: Dr Jan Peter Laurens Loovers (University of Aberdeen) and Dr Sara Asu Schroer (University of Aberdeen).
Deadline: 15th of February
The panel is part of the ASA conference “Footprints and Futures: The Time of Anthropology”, 4 to 7 July 2016, Durham University. You can submit your paper proposal through the conference homepage:
