We seek to appoint a talented and ambitious biostatistician to a new interdisciplinary research programme in population health and genomics. The goals of this new programme are to advance understanding of iron homeostasis and the causes and consequences of iron deficiency in frequent blood donors through powerful interdisciplinary studies that combine cutting-edge genomics tools, clinical science, and quantitative methods.
The post holder will work in the area of stratified medicine, with applications to blood donation. The aim is to develop stratified and dynamic approaches to recommending the intervals at which particular groups of blood donors should be able to give blood. The work will include both methodological research and applied data analysis, based on a major randomised trial and subsequent longitudinal study of 50,000 blood donors in the UK. Findings from the study will have major implications for blood donation policies in the UK and internationally.
The Fellowship provides an exciting opportunity for a future leader in biostatistics to launch their independent research career, and benefit from a world-class research environment with excellent mentoring and career development training opportunities. The post holder will have: (1) a relevant background (a PhD in statistics or related area) or equivalent experience, and at least two years’ relevant post-doctoral experience; (2) experience of working with large, complex datasets (3) a strong track record of authoring scientific publications (including first-author publications) in applied biostatistical methods, ideally including high-impact journals, (4) experience of leading research projects, (5) experience of supervising junior staff or students.
The post is available from April 2016, and is for three years in the first instance. It is anticipated that the post holder would apply for a fellowship during this time.
The post holder will work under the direction of Dr Michael Sweeting and Prof Simon Thompson and develop research links and collaborations with cognate members of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit and MRC Biostatistics Unit.
