Statistical Modeller (HSE SD B4/HEO)

Salary: This post attracts a salary from £29,180 dependent on relevant experience and skills.

HSE is the independent regulator for work-related health and safety in Great Britain. We act in the public interest to reduce work-related illness, death and serious injury across a range of industry sectors. Our regulatory responsibilities cover a wide range of industries across Great Britain from the smallest microbusiness right up to major global companies who manage high hazard facilities. This post will be based in the Science Directorate of HSE which comprises of our state of the art laboratory in Buxton as well as our Bootle office base.

The scope of our work requires a diversity of talents. The Science Directorate employs around 480 people including scientists, engineers, economists, doctors, psychologists, social scientists, health professionals and technical specialists. Operating from Buxton and Bootle, plus a number of field stations, our staff have a long track record of effective operation throughout the UK and beyond. Our capabilities encompass a wide range of topics including: fire, explosion and process safety; human factors and risk assessment; occupational and environmental health; economic impact assessment; producing national statistics; safety engineering; work environment; and specialist photographic and technical services. This breadth of expertise underpins our particular strength in creating multidisciplinary teams to solve health and safety problems.

As well as analytical laboratories for chemical, microbiological, occupational health, occupational hygiene and fire and explosion work, our Buxton facility houses specialist facilities for studying thermal stress, personal protective equipment and pedestrian safety, an anechoic chamber for noise and vibration work, a biomechanics laboratory and a customised suite for human volunteer studies. The engineering block includes the largest and most versatile Universal Test Bed (UTB) in the country.

We also have extensive trials areas on the Buxton site where we are able to undertake large-scale experiments, particularly in the areas of fires and explosion safety. The facilities include the biggest impact track in Europe; one of the largest open air test ranges; two large tunnels for studies of explosions and fires; a purpose-built jet fire facility; drop weight facilities; a temporary structures rig; and wire rope fatigue testing equipment.

These world class facilities will enable HSE’s Science Directorate to maintain its position at the forefront of research in work-related accidents and ill-health.

The post:
To carry out research and support work in the area of applications of statistical and epidemiological modelling to Health and Safety and other areas of interest to HSE and other customers, and to contribute effectively to projects for HSE and external customers to time, cost and customer satisfaction, whilst complying with health, safety, environment and quality standards.

This will include the following:
•	Providing bespoke statistical modelling solutions for customers
•	Working flexibly across the portfolio of research in the Mathematical Sciences Unit
•	Working collaboratively across HSL’s Units and with external experts
•	Assisting with the preparation of proposals for research and support work for HSE and external customers
•	Writing reports, peer-reviewed papers and presenting research at conferences and seminars
•	Publicising and promoting the work of the team and helping to increase the customer base
•	Contributing to the growth of non-HSE business for the Unit by generating new ideas for offerings and potential clients.

Job Responsibilities:
The main responsibilities of this post will be to undertake statistical modelling for clients, as required by the Health and Safety Laboratory, the Health and Safety Executive and external customers, in specific areas of the team’s portfolio of work. These may include:
•	Epidemiological modelling of chronic occupational diseases
•	Statistical modelling of biological systems
•	Development of new human health risk assessment methodologies
•	Modelling of component ageing and failure of nuclear installations

Specifically this will include:
•	Providing statistical modelling expertise
•	Coding of statistical models
•	Reporting the outcomes of scientific research through writing reports, peer-reviewed publications, and through presentations at scientific conferences
•	Providing statistical support to colleagues in other teams across the laboratory
•	Contributing to the business development activities of the team through developing proposals for clients and pro-actively seeking new opportunities for non-HSE work.

Personal Requirements
Relevant qualifications required:
Essential:-
•	Good honours degree in a numerate subject, 2.1 or above.
•	Post-graduate qualification in mathematics or statistics, or equivalent experience

You must be able to demonstrate the following Job Related Expertise (JRE);
Essential:
1 - Demonstrate expertise and experience in statistical modelling or epidemiological analysis of real world applications. Experience in economic modelling and Bayesian statistical methods, including Markov Chain Monte Carlo, would be desirable though not essential
2 - Demonstrate your experience of algorithm coding, preferably in Stata, R, MATLAB or similar languages
3 - Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal with an ability to present statistical concepts in a simple and clear way. 

Experience in preparing and contributing to peer-reviewed publications is desirable though not essential
You must also be able to demonstrate the following competencies;

•	Delivering Results; Managing a Quality Service
