Hi all,
I think there's still plenty of scope for innovation in this area, as in
general we're a bit disappointed by the quality of what's currently
available for heritage sites. I wonder if this isn't because a few years
ago some sites blew their digital budgets on this new-fangled "app thing"
and are feeling a bit burnt by the whole experience.
I would be interested to hear others' thoughts on this?
Anyway, I've asked around the office to see what the development team
thought were best last year, and we think the best museum apps remain the
MOMA app:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/developer/moma-the-museum-of-modern-art/id383990458?mt=8
and the Guggenheim app:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/guggenheim/id600046331?mt=8
Why? In my opinion they tick a lot of boxes that I think are essential for
museum and heritage apps:
1) Don't supplant the experience of being present in the space
2) Be easy to navigate. They don't try to be clever with content display,
they try to be useful for visitors
3) Present information clearly. These apps don't feel like they've crammed
a lot of extraneous gumpf in
4) Information is structured carefully - what you want is where you'd
expect to find it.
In terms of innovative features, I think the most interesting new arrival
is the de Young app, if only for the awesome interactive 3D maps. Indoor
user location as well, though of course haven't been able to try that out,
seemingly using iBeacons. Unfortunately the rest of the app we think is
just so-so. See what you think:

Best regards,
Nick
