italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Cari colleghi,
I have a book manuscript which has been tentatively accepted for
publication, but, as an independent scholar, I have had to write it,
unfortunately, without the benefit of much consultation or feedback
from fellow scholars in the field.
The book deals with covert criticism of the Medici in Renaissance
Florence, and is entitled: "Hidden in Plain Sight: Covert Criticism of
the Medici in Renaissance Florence."
The chapter for which I would like to ask for assistance presents a
political, pro-republican, anti-Medicean interpretation of
Michelangelo's Medici Chapel in Florence, based upon a close
examination of Michelangelo's political opinions and activities,
placed in the context of the Florentine tradition of political
sculpture, together with a close examination of specific visual
details of the monument, seen against the classical iconographic
tradition of captive figures.
Since I am not trained as an art historian, and the fact that this
interpretation of the Chapel, while not new, either among scholars or
visitors to the Chapel, will be, I expect, quite controversial among
scholars of Michelangelo, I would really very much like to receive
some comments, suggestions, or feedback on this chapter before I
submit the final manuscript to the publisher.
If any of you might be willing to give this chapter a quick (or not so
quick) reading, and point out any glaring errors, or make any
suggestions for improvement (including references, either visual or
textual, of which I am unaware), I would be very grateful, and would
also be happy to compensate you (either monetarily or by returning the
favor) for your time. Any suggestions which I adopt would also, of
course, be acknowledged in the manuscript itself.
Thanks very much,
Saluti, buon lavoro, e Buon'Anno,
Jim Ward
