South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership

Up to 56 fully-funded PhD studentships in the arts and humanities available for September 2016 – Competition opens on Monday 30th November 2015.

The 21st century is transforming academic research: the creative and intellectual challenges of our research enquiries are now combined with the demands of a dynamic and ever more globalised society with languages playing an important role. The AHRC-funded SWW DTP gives the Arts & Humanities researcher access to the experience and skills essential for success in this new research world. The ‘Languages & Cultures’ panel invites applicants from all major Modern Languages, Celtic Studies and Classics.

The SWW DTP is designed to route our researchers into productive careers whether in academia or professional practice. We provide bespoke support tailored to your project and your career aspirations, enriched by the world-class expertise and state-of-the-art resources available at our eight leading universities (Aberystwyth, Bath, Bath Spa, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Reading and Southampton) and our prestigious sector partners. The SWW DTP offers joint supervision arrangements between its partner universities as standard, ensuring an exceptional breadth and depth of coverage for your project. Collaboration among the Modern Languages, Celtic Studies and Classics and between all partners in the South West, West and Wales now in the third call for applications is well established. The diversity and the large and internationally well connected departments these regions have to offer, will help you to establish unique career opportunities.

SWW DTP students have unrivalled access to prestigious organisations such as BBC Drama (Cardiff), BBC Factual (Bristol), Historic Heritage, London Metropolitan Archives, the National Library of Wales, the National Archives and the Welsh National Opera, among others. Our students also benefit from an extensive catalogue of enhanced training, including:

-- Consortium Training: M-level modules, subject, researcher and professional skills training from all 8 consortium institutions regardless of where you are registered.
-- The DTP’s unique Professional Arts and Humanities Researcher programme: a skills training programme designed by the SWW DTP to develop essential research and transferable skills linked to academic progression, personal and professional development.
-- Collaborative Training Programme: developed each year in response to the needs of each cohort and delivered by academics and partners from across the consortium.

How to apply

The SWW DTP Studentship Competition opens on Monday 30th November 2015.

The applications process for SWW DTP studentships is open from 30 November 2015. The closing date 11 January 2016. Applications should be submitted online and further information is available on our website (http://www.sww-ahdtp.ac.uk/studentship/apply-for-a-studentship/)
Eligibility

You should have attained at least a first degree at 2:2 or higher (or international equivalent), and have achieved or be working towards a postgraduate qualification.

We also encourage applications from those with non-traditional qualifications/routes who:

-- Achieved at least a first degree of 2.2 or higher (or international equivalent) and are not presently working towards a postgraduate qualification, but who can demonstrate equivalent experience and aptitude for research in their field.

-- Did not achieve a first degree at 2.2 or higher (or international equivalent) but can demonstrate high achievement at postgraduate level.

The SWW DTP is funded by and works in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The AHRC funds postgraduate training and research in the arts and humanities, from archaeology and English literature to design and dance. Each studentship will cover a stipend at the standard Research Council rate, currently £14,057 per annum for 2015-2016, and tuition fees for UK/EU for students who meet the residency requirements outlined by the AHRC (www.ahrc.ac.uk). Studentship terms will be tailored to individual needs and may cover periods of doctoral training and external placements.

Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award from the AHRC. Such students may also be eligible for a stipend at the rate outlined above, from the SWW DTP (http://www.sww-ahdtp.ac.uk/studentships).

Apply to the SWW DTP and become part of the new generation of arts and humanities researchers.
