The Astrophysics Group at the University of Exeter wishes to recruit
an ambitious, highly qualified Associate Research Fellow to work on
astronomical instrumentation for high-angular resolution imaging.
The successful candidate will work on an ERC-funded project that aims
to enable breakthrough results in imaging planet-induced structures in
the inner-most AU of protoplanetary discs. For this purpose we will
upgrade the CHARA/MIRC instrument, which is worldwide the only
existing 6-telescope infrared beam combiner. We will implement a mode
for simultaneous observations in the near-infrared J- and H-band and
install a low-read noise camera based on the SAPHIRA e-APD technology
that will dramatically increase the sensitivity of the instrument,
enabling efficient milliarcsecond-resolution imaging of young stellar
objects. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the
group around Prof. John Monnier at the University of Michigan at Ann
Arbor.
We search for a candidate with strong experience in opto-mechanics
and in the programming of control software for optical systems.
The fellow will be actively engaged in the instrument integration,
commissioning, and science observations.
The position is available for at least 24 months, with much flexibility
on the starting date and on the amount of time to be spent in Exeter
and in Ann Arbor/Michigan.
