ah, Doug, safe in Canada…
As a kiwi from australia still sitting it all out in seattle,
I’d like to encourage Patrick and all to try this crazy country
with its countless pockets of decency,
gentleness, and natural beauty, grandeur, and so on…
Yes, I’m so bothered by the bad news I have been keeping away from it,
which I’ve always said was irresponsible…
Taking a ride by Lyft on Sunday evening through Capitol Hill Seattle,
I heard the driver say:
O-oh, Broadway is packed with people marching in the rain.
She made a detour,
we noticed many on the street wore masks,
and
on my way back after the play reading at Elliott Bay Book Company
(another story), I noticed still on Broadway
several police standing by their pushbikes.
Last MayDay they were very busy shepherding a demo -
and failed to stop the breaking of many plate glass windows in the shopping drag.
A policeman told me the rain had helped the parade go off quietly,
but - they call themselves anarchists…
What got them out this time was a rumor that
'white supremacists/neoNazis'
were getting together nearby.
Only a rumor, I believe.
I trudged home, noticing just one graffito:
Dykes against Nazism
Next day it had been obliterated, so I didn’t get a snap.
Safe home, Max
