‘Risk Work’: An Ethnography of Health Professionals in the Context of Risk and Uncertainty
In the UK, there have been calls for the NHS to move towards a preventive rather than a cure-based model. This PhD will explore the backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences of midwives and nurses, who are at the front-line of this prevention industry, in Wales. The successful candidate's contribution will be an ethnography of midwives and nurses which focuses on what their everyday work entails with respect to prevention and managing health risks, how this relates to their other professional roles, and the training needs of this important workforce. They will conduct interviews with midwives and nurses as well as observe of their working environments, attending particularly to the importance of discourse and architecture/materiality in such settings. The project will be part of a wider research collaboration on ‘risk work’ developed by academics at Cardiff University (Gareth Thomas), University of Birmingham (Nicola Gale, Sheila Greenfield), and University of Amsterdam (Patrick Brown).
