The way you interact with others is the key to workplace and business success. Whether you're communicating under pressure, managing challenging relationships, or looking to build lasting rapport, your style and interpersonal skills could be the difference between success and failure.
Below you'll find 8 simple steps for effective face-to-face communication:
1. Focus. The other person should have your full attention.
2. Listen actively. Make eye contact, use questions to explore the topic, summarise occasionally and keep to the point.
3. Respond. Be aware of the verbal and non-verbal cues the other person is giving out and respond appropriately.
4. State your own view. Be as clear and concise as possible.
5. Take others’ ideas on board. Link back to them and build upon them, this shows that you are genuinely listening and value their input.
6. If you disagree, explain why and be prepared to discuss it further.
7. Keep an open mind.
8. In the end, summarise where you’ve got to and agree the way forward.
