Call for Participation – IDC2016

Digital technologies have brought a whole range of opportunities and experiences to children. Information is available within seconds, digital games can be played anywhere, social activity can be organised with two or three text messages or social media posts; yet, more than half of the world’s children cannot participate.
Exclusion from a digital childhood comes in many guises. Children may have cognitive, physical or sensory difficulties that prevent access to otherwise commonly available experiences, children may live in environments where financial and infrastructure constraints limit their ability to participate in rapidly evolving digital cultures. By developing technologies that promote social inclusion and personal accessibility we can encourage and support creativity in all children.
IDC2016 seeks to provoke the community to consider how best to create digital technologies that bring children together, feed their creativity and erode the barriers to participation. The conference aim is to deliver ‘research that makes a difference’ and the overarching conference themes are: Accessibility, Inclusion and Creativity.
IDC 2016 therefore invites researchers and practitioners to share their work on how technology can be designed to improve children’s well being in a global context and seeks to discover how children, their parents, teachers and peers can contribute to the design of new technology. We invite researchers and participants to share thoughts on emerging technologies for children, experiences and insights into designing and evaluating interactive technologies with children, investigations on methods and approaches to designing such technologies, new theoretical perspectives, questioning how we can build tomorrow’s technology – together.
IDC 2016 welcomes submissions in the form of full papers, short papers (notes), demonstrations, workshops, courses, work in progress / late breaking and interactive child experiences. There is also a call for participants to submit to the doctoral consortium and for late submission to our research and design competition. Submissions to all tracks (except the research and design competition for which a separate call will be announced) are invited on the following topics:
• Innovative interactive technologies for children
• Theoretically motivated arguments regarding interaction design and children
• Empirical studies concerned with the interaction of children and technology
• Methods and techniques supporting interaction design and children
• Studies of the effects of technology on children’s lives and development
• Reflective analyses on the field of child computer interaction and interaction design
• Constructive design research for and with children
• Studies discussing the involvement of children in the design process
• Future vision articles, discussing trends and directions for the field
Papers and Notes
---------------------
Submission deadline: 22 January 2016
Intended to report original work not previously published elsewhere, Papers and Notes may address any of the areas listed in the conference topics. Papers and Notes should clearly state the contribution(s) in the paper and the abstract. Papers and Notes making one clear, significant contribution are more likely to be accepted than those making several lesser contributions. Submissions to these categories must identify and cite relevant published work and explain how the paper furthers state of the art within Interaction Design and Children. Papers will be expected to be between 8 and 10 pages long – not including references, Notes will be expected to be between 4 and 6 pages – not including references. We encourage authors to select the venue based on the way their work writes up – rather than see Notes as inferior to Papers.
All accepted Papers and Notes will be included in the conference proceedings published in the ACM digital library. Submissions for review should be anonymized and should adhere to the format provided in the template. Once accepted for publication, submissions will go through a light second review process to ensure ethical and cultural positioning of the work. Publication of the paper is dependent on there being at least one author of the paper registered for the conference.
Workshops
--------------
Submission deadline: 22 February 2016
Workshops provide a forum for in-depth discussions, resource exchange and networking related to specific topics within IDC. A workshop may be half-day or full day in length, and typically have 15 to 20 participants. Persons interested in participating in a workshop can submit a position paper to the organizers of that workshop. Please note that attendants must register for both the workshop and the IDC conference itself.
Potential organizers are invited to submit a workshop proposal consisting of the following components:
A proposal (not to exceed 3000 words) in CHI extended abstracts format, describing the scope of the workshop, the organisers (with short bios), details of who is expected to participate, main topics covered, and expected workshop outcomes
Brief abstract to appear in the program
300-word call for participation that will be used to publicize your workshop
Proposals will not undergo a full peer review, however an expert jury will consider each submission based on the workshop topic’s potential for generating community interest. Workshops aligned to the conference themes will be especially welcomed. The conference organisers reserve the right to ask workshops that are very similar to consider merging as a condition of acceptance.
Courses

IDC2016 aims to include two or three ninety-minute courses for the delegates. Potential organizers are invited to submit a course proposal consisting of the following components:
A proposal (not to exceed 3000 words) in CHI extended abstracts format, describing the learning objectives of the course, the organisers (with short bios), details of who would likely participate, and expected plan for the time.
Brief abstract to appear in the program
Sample material for the course (optional)
The conference organisers reserve the right to ask courses that are very similar to consider merging as a condition of acceptance.
Demos
---------
Submission deadline: 25 March 2016
Demos are interactive expositions of technologies and technology solutions. For IDC2016 we particularly welcome demos that showcase solutions aligned to the conference themes. Demos should not been previously published or shown at previous editions of IDC. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate work in progress and late-breaking research results that show the latest innovative ideas.
Demos should be described in no more than 4 pages using the CHI Extended abstracts format. The explanation of the demo should include a section marked ‘Practical considerations’ where the authors will explain what might be needed to ensure the demo is well prepared.
Late Breaking / Work in Progress

Submission deadline: 25 March 2016
Late breaking / Work in progress papers will be presented at the conference in a poster session. Papers in this category should be written up using the CHI Extended abstract format.
Late Breaking / Work in Progress papers should not exceed 6 pages in length including references. These papers will be peer reviewed and will be published in the ACM Digital library. This track is suited to late breaking work and work in progress. For this reason, papers that do not fit these categories will be less likely to be accepted for publication than those that do. We define late breaking work as current work that is very new, we define work in progress work as early results in new studies.
Interactive Child Experience

New this year, the interactive child experience track is an opportunity for researchers and designers to present their work to, or do a small research study with, children in the UK. Work that is proposed to this track must have relevant ethical clearance from the submitting institution and this must be in place, and evidenced, six weeks before the conference. Submissions are not constrained in length but should clearly articulate what the interactive session will comprise, specifying what the children will be doing, what data will be collected, what recordings will be made, what technology and what other instruments (surveys etc) will be used and what might be the anticipated group size (number of children at a time) and duration (per group). On acceptance ICE submissions will be allocated a time to work with children and will be expected to fully comply with any restrictions placed on the work by the ChiCI group who will oversee the experiences under the auspices of a MESS Day event.
Doctoral Consortium

The IDC2016 Doctoral Consortium is a forum for PhD students to present their work to a critical panel to receive feedback and guidance to help timely and successful completion of PhD research. It is a closed event in which only PhD students participate. Interested students should submit an extended research abstract describing: the research topic, the work done to date, the plan for the next stages of the work and the methods used / proposed to be used. Each submission must be accompanied by a letter from the candidates supervisory team confirming his / her eligibility for this venue.
Research and Design Competition

Submission deadline: TBA
Children across the globe are being invited, via the IDC2016 website, to submit ideas for research and design for the IDC community. This process will complete in late 2015 and then the IDC community will be ‘charged’ with participating in this child led competition to design or research a solution that has been proposed by children.
