Hi Michelle
Transfusion decisions are never made based on POCT results. They indicate the need to confirm with an FBC to the lab. Blood bank would not issue products until this criteria is met unless in an emergency. Our theatres have access to a blood gas analyser in the nearby ICU but not their own. They do have hemocues though. Therefore there can be a combination of blood gas tHb and hemocues Hb in use at the point of care.

Subject: Hemocue
Dear All
I just wanted to get a consensus on whether or not general theatres in other Trusts are using Hemocue analysers for Hb results, how many analyses they do per patient, and whether or not patients are transfused on those results. In Trusts where the theatres have co-ox available on a blood gas machine, is a Hemocue in use, or do they just use the gas machine for Hb?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated, we have had a request from our general theatres to remove the Hemocue analyser now that they have had a GEM 4000 installed.
Best wishes
Michelle
