Postdoctoral positions with Musahid Ahmed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will become available to develop experimental techniques to explore chemical transformations in complex systems. These positions entail coupling laser and synchrotron based photons, ion and electron beams to a diverse set of reactors to probe chemical transformations in gas phase clusters, nanoparticles, liquids and surfaces. Experiments will be designed for both vacuum and ambient conditions. The positions require strong independent research skills coupled with the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
X-ray absorption spectroscopy of size selected clusters with ion trapping mass spectrometry, ambient ionization mass spectrometry and X-ray spectroscopy in microfluidic reactors, electron and photon based spectroscopies of nanoparticles and aerosols in the gas phase, and development of molecular beam techniques to probe ion induced molecular growth and catalytic chemistry are some of the themes that will be explored under the aegis of this program.
Qualified candidates will hold a recent (or in the process of obtaining) PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or a related field and will have a strong experimental and instrumental background. Experience with but not limited to building instrumentation related to mass spectrometry, electron spectroscopy, ion/electron imaging, coupling of microfluidic devices, lasers and synchrotron radiation to analytical instruments, are a prerequisite for consideration as is the ability to interpret and analyze complicated data. Knowledge of electronic structure methods, Labview, and CAD design software would be very valuable. Positions will become available in the summer of 2016, with funding renewable annually, depending on performance, for up to three years.
Interested candidates should submit their CV, names of potential referees, and a statement about their research background and interests to
