I think the most common gotcha here is not getting the yum priorities setup right; the priorities in the various repository config files need to be set correctly, and the yum-priorities plugin installed to allow older packages from the grid repos to override higher version numbered ones from the base and epel repos.
Approaching the problem slightly differently though, I thought we were under the impression that there was a maintained version of Matt's tarball UI kept in cvmfs now, so you might be able to use that in much the same way that your ATLAS users can use the one from the ATLAS cvmfs.
