Martin,Hatchets would be the only tool sharpened on a grindstone of this kind,All other tools would be sharpened by the blacksmith ,in the fire and hammered out on the anvil and then tempered.

Thank you to all of those who replied with suggestions about the circular object from Avoca. Most seem to indicate that the square axle suggests that the object was meant to rotate and the most plausible explanation is that it was a grindstone for sharpening tools (perhaps axes for timbering?). We don't know where within the mine the items were found but I suspect that they are probably C19th in age.
