Dear MCGers

Some of you might like to know that we’re advertising for a designer/developer role at Surface Impression. We’re particularly keen to hear from people who have worked in or for the museum sector (and/or wider cultural sector) as that is our core client-base.

The deadline is this Friday, apologies for the short notice - I’m afraid it only just occurred to me that people on the MCG list might like to see it! If anybody on the list would like to apply, but needs a couple of extra days to get a CV together, please just let me know.

Surface Impression has a stand at the Museums Association conference on Thursday and Friday, so feel free to seek me out. It’s stand number 4.

The vacancy details are below...

best regards

LEAD DIGITAL DESIGNER/FRONT-END DEVELOPER - SURFACE IMPRESSION LTD.

Brighton and Hove

Closing date: 06/11/2015

Surface Impression is an imaginative and innovative digital media development company based in Brighton. Since the company was founded in 2001, we have specialised in delivering communication resources for cultural heritage, education, arts organisations and charities.

Our core services are web and graphic design, smartphone apps, programming, user interface design, content management, database development, strategic consultancy and information architecture. We also provide content creation, editorial consultancy, accessibility and usability testing, ongoing support and training.

Job Description:
We are looking for a digital designer with strong front-end development skills including experience of developing themes in Wordpress (and other systems).
This varied role involves the development of design for all our projects - this could be a website, app or interactive for our clients in the cultural and heritage sectors. You will be involved with projects from the early stages of sketches, wireframing, static design and static HTML prototypes, right through to release of the final product (for example, a Wordpress install with custom posts and a bespoke theme). Working closely with our Project Manager and directly with our clients, you will be a key member of the team, leading the creative direction of our projects. Our friendly team of multi-skilled developers, content managers and usability experts enjoy working collaboratively to produce high quality digital products for our clients.
At Surface Impression we take pride in producing user-friendly, accessible digital products. This, and audience engagement, is at the forefront of our design and development processes. Whether the product is an online museum collection, an arts based competition module, or an exhibition app, the audience experience and usability is key. You will be a significant part of this process, so experience of an accessible, user-focused digital approach would be highly beneficial.

Skills Range:
Essential skills:
Graphic Design
CSS
HTML
JavaScript
Wordpress
Desirable skills / experience:
Drupal
PHP / MySQL
Experience of working in the cultural and heritage sector

Person Specification:
You will be experienced at using iterative design processes, working directly with clients to help shape their project and communicate design decisions. Excellent communication skills, via telephone, email or in person, are a must. A good eye for detail in both design and development terms is essential and being well versed in the principles of graphic design and typography is highly advantageous.
As responsive, flexible design is our standard digital approach you must be comfortable with responsive techniques (mobile-first) and cross-platform compatibility. Your previous experience should demonstrate that you are good at planning, ensuring the flow of information is logical and suits the project brief. Working as part of a small team your willingness to help out as needed and conscientious approach to work will be highly valued.

Flexible Attendance
We can be flexible on days and hours worked and will consider applicants who can be available from 25 hours to 37.5 hours per week. Your working pattern to be agreed at commencement of employment.
