Dear colleagues,
I have on my bench a rather nice turtle fossil consisting of a large nodule with
the impression of the internal surface of the plastron overlying what is clearly
at least a partial skeleton (I enclose a couple of photos). Unfortunately there
is no provenance information for this specimen whatsoever (it is from a
collection in the midlands dating to about mid-18thC). It reminds me, however,
of a fossil turtle in a 'limestone nodule' of a similar size in the Norwich
Castle Museum collection that was apparently dredged from the Eocene London Clay
of Harwich Harbour in 1827.
My questions are:
- Does anyone have a similar specimen in their collection?
- If so, do you know where is it from?
- If you don't have a similar specimen in your collection but you happen to
recognise this preservation or have seen such turtle fossils before, please get
in touch with what details you have.
- Any advice is welcome.
Many thanks indeed for your time, and my apologies for cross-posting.
With best wishes, Nigel.
