Funded Ph.D. Student Position
in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
on Evolutionary Computation and Machine Learning
to improve brachytherapy cancer treatment
https://www.amc.nl/web/Het-AMC/Werken-in-het-AMC/Vacatures/Vacatureoverzicht/PhD-Improving-brachytherapy-cancer-treatment-planning.htm
Description
-----------
CWI (the Dutch national research center for mathematics and
computer science), AMC (the Academic Medical Center), both
located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Elekta brachytherapy
located in Veenendaal, The Netherlands, have a joint project
for which currently there exists a PhD student vacancy at AMC.
The project involves the fundamental development of (evolutionary)
machine learning algorithms, but additionally has a clear
application in radiation oncology.
On the fundamental development side, the goal is to develop
novel, scalable evolutionary algorithms for machine learning
purposes. In particular we are interested in the development
and use of genetic programming techniques that allow finding
mappings from feature space to decision space that can be
analyzed and processed more easily by medical experts (than
e.g. neural networks).
On the application side, the goal in the position at AMC is
to learn, for the first time, what makes a good radiation
treatment plan for treating cancer in the case of brachytherapy
(internal radiation therapy), based on previously approved
brachytherapy plans. This can be done for certain types of
patients as well as for individual medical experts. This
information will then be used to improve the automated
computing of initial brachytherapy plans so that no or
very little additional fine-tuning is required by experts.
This project is funded by NWO (Nederlandse organisatie voor
Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and a company: Elekta Brachytherapy
in Veenendaal, The Netherlands.
This PhD position is part of a larger collaboration project
between the department of Radiation Oncology of AMC, the
life sciences research group of CWI, and Elekta Brachytherapy.
The team of senior researchers involved ensures that excellent
supervision is available both on the fundamental, algorithmic
computer science side as well as on the application, radiation
oncology, side.
Requirements
------------
Candidates are required to have an M.Sc. degree in computer
science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, physics, or
similar areas. M.Sc. students that expect to graduate soon
may also apply. Candidates are moreover required to have
substantial programming skills, including EXCELLENT working
knowledge of at least one of the following programming
languages: C, C++, Java. Experience with the design and
implementation of parallel algorithms is desirable, but not
a strict requirement. Candidates should have a clear interest
in working both on fundamental research as well as on applying
this research. Candidates should be willing to cooperate
with experts across different disciplines (including computer
science, physics, and radiotherapy). Candidates are expected
to have an excellent command of English.
