We invite applications for a post of Research Associate to work full-time for the three years on an exciting and innovatory project on the relationship between migration and mental health in one Chinese mega-city: Shanghai. At the heart of the project is an attempt to mix what we know about mental health in contemporary Shanghai with a new kind of close-up, street-level ethnography on what the daily experience of being a migrant on Shanghai is actually like - especially with regard to stress, housing, and access to services.

The project involves specific collaboration between King's College, Cardiff University, Cambridge University, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. There is a separate funding stream provided to both the UK and Shanghai based teams by the ESRC/NSFC/Newton Fund. The aim of the Newton Fund is to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries. The fund is £75 million each year from 2014 for 5 years.

The post-holder will manage the day-to-day work of the project, maintaining close links with colleagues in UK and China, and contribute to each of the three work packages under guidance from the Principal Investigator Professor Nick Manning. Duties will include regular travel between UK and China for coordination discussions; international literature search and summary; advise and oversee field investigations of stage II and stage III; devise and coordinate meetings, workshops, conferences and other dissemination mechanisms; structure and contribute to final report; contribute to published outputs.

The post is full-time and funding is from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018.

The job will be based in the Department of Social Science, Health and Medicine located at the Strand Campus and will require some travel to Cardiff University, Cambridge University and to Shanghai.

Interviews will be held on 17 December 2015.

Closing date: 08 December 2015
