Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Department of Design invites applications for
Postdoctoral Researcher in Design

The Department of Design is an internationally acknowledged design education and research unit. The department has a team of 40 researchers and about 750 students most of which study on postgraduate level. Its research foci are human centered design, constructive design research, cultural design research and sustainable design. (http://design.aalto.fi/en/)

The Department of Design, Fashion/Textile Futures research group is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for the Trash to Cash (T2C) project. T2C is a multidisciplinary project which integrates design, business and technology to a coherent discipline to establish new creative industries. The aim is to develop new material and product opportunities via creative design from waste or process by-product, reduce the utilization of virgin materials; improve material efficiency; decrease landfill volumes and energy consumption and use design for recycling strategies with the vision of closing the material loop in the textile sector. Aalto ARTS will contribute to project through developing design methods for multidisciplinary collaboration, constructing principles for design-for-recycling, studying consumer engagement for recycling and in moreover investigating the new value creation in recycling economy. The project is funded by Horizon2020 EU programme and it is a large European collaboration between different research units, universities and industrial partners around Europe. http://trash2cashproject.eu/

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct high quality research in collaboration with the multidisciplinary research team, focusing in the experiences and benefits of using design-driven approach in multidisciplinary collaboration. Half of the working time will be allocated for coordinating the project, and the other half for own research contributing to design discipline, although the researcher will also participate the teaching.

Qualified candidates are expected to have experience in design-driven approach and methods preferably in multidisciplinary research projects. Experience from network collaboration and multidisciplinary knowledge building or/and sustainable design are advances. Further strong skills in project management, communication, academic writing and international collaboration are needed in this position.
The position is fixed-term and will be filled until November 2018. The starting date is preferably in January 2016. Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the chosen person following the salary system of Finnish universities.

•       Three most relevant publications (as attached files or links)
•       One page summary of each of the following: candidate’s research achievements; artistic and/or professional achievements; teaching merits; and contribution to research community
•       Proposal on candidate’s own research contribution to the subject area in the T2C project (1 page)

 All material should be submitted in English. The application materials will not be returned.
The evaluation is based on the total assessment of a candidate in each main dimension: research, interest in multidisciplinary collaboration between design and science, teaching and activity in scientific community. The main weight is put on research.
Aalto University reserves the right to leave the position open, to extend the application period and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.
